Nars: Nouveau Monde Eyeshadow Duo

Nouveau Monde!

This was definitely my most desired item from the Nars Spring 2011 Collection, the eyeshadow duo in Nouveau Monde, featuring a shimmery lilac on one side and dark olive brown on the other. I got this last month as a birthday gift to myself and just now got around to wearing it (although of course, I took pictures right away) I knew I was going to love this though in part because of the colors and because my first Nars eyeshadow experience with Etrusque went so well.

I had been wanting an olive shadow lately and of course, always want purple so this was right up my alley. I read great reviews about this duo and needless to say, was not disappointed. The shadows are very pigmented and the colors show nicely and go well together, but not necessarily in a typical way. I think these colors are so nice for spring and I look forward to getting a lot of wear out of them. I do tend to wear a lot of green and purple, but I’m going to try to go with this in a non-matchy way as much as I can. I also like that you can use either color as the primary, today when I wore it, it was mostly the olive shadow.

Nars: Etrusque Eyeshadow

Deep wonderful gold!

Nars’ Etrusque was a much coveted item for me around the holiday season. It is from their Holiday collection 2010 and it is a rich, shimmering gold shadow.

I’ve been wearing this color non stop since I got it. At first I thought it was going to be much darker from the previous gold shadows I have owned. You can see how I would think that from how dark it looks in the packaging. I was surprised to see that when I applied it with a plain, dry brush it was lighter than I had predicted. Not too light that you couldn’t tell it was gold of course. Honestly, I’m not sure if this is good or bad I think I would’ve liked it the same whether it was light gold or dark gold.

Sales!

Hey everyone! We kind of slacked on reminding you all about the Rescue Beauty Lounge sale yesterday. I hope no one missed it and that there will be another sale soon. Liz and I can’t wait to get the polishes we ordered and post all about them as it’s our first experience with RBL.

I got an e-mail today about 20% off at Beauty.com. That promo lasts all week until Fri. Nov. 5. They have a good selection of a lot of polish brands from Essie and Orly to Nars, Butter London, and Deborah Lippmann. I’m pretty sure they do free shipping at a pretty reasonable minimum order, somewhere between $20 and $30, so if you need to grab other make up items in addition to polish, this is a great time to do it!

Nars: Purple Rain

Back in June, I picked up Nars Versailles and Purple Rain on a Sephora binge. I blogged about Versailles right away. I used a base coat and Seche Vite top coat and my mani was ruined in under 2 hours, the polish didn’t wear well at all period. I read the packaging and it seemed like Nars polish was supposed to be a one-step deal. I said that the next time I used Nars polish, I wouldn’t do base or top coats. I finally got around to using Purple Rain and here are the results:

In the shade

The application was fine, no issues there. The color is a dark purple with a deep shimmer, pink/purple glitter. This picture was taken the day after I painted. Do you see how DULL the color looks? I don’t think it’s me. I wanted to see the glitter! You can barely tell it’s there. I already have tip wear, which continued to get worse and it got so scratched and dented after a day of wear. One plus is that on day 2, I don’t really have any chips, just tip wear and a dull mani. Still, for what these cost I expect more. I don’t want to look at scratches and dents, I want to enjoy wearing a polish.

Glitter?

You get a better shot of the glitter in this pic. I really wanted this color to be magical. Don’t get me wrong, it’s a beautiful color, but every time I look down at my nails, I just see purple, nothing special. I’m going to give this another shot with a top coat that isn’t Seche and see how it goes. I’m really hoping it works out because I can’t see myself dropping any more money on Nars nail polish if they look great in the bottle, but not on my nails and I can’t wear base or top coats with them.

At least it’s almost Friday,

Beauty Binge Pt. 2: Nars-Fest (featuring Versailles)

As promised, here is my follow up to yesterday’s post with the rest of the glorious goodies I picked up in the last couple weeks. After raiding the Internet and local drugstores, you can imagine I wasn’t done shopping so I hopped in my car and visited my local Sephora…

Love Devotion, Purple Rain, and Versailles

Sorry my picture is a little wonky, I was excited at the time. I was in Sephora for awhile, definitely too long, trying on make-up and asking crazy questions. I ended up walking out with all Nars items, aside from a Sephora foundation brush and blotting papers. The lipstick is Love Devotion and the polish on the right is Versailles, both are from the Summer 2010 collection. I’m not sure if Purple Rain (the middle polish) is or not because it’s not shown on the website as being part of the collection. I also desperately wanted the Cleo duo eye shadow, but luckily for my bank account they were sold out of that (it’s a deep turquoise-grey with light blue). The lipstick is really pretty, looks like a bright coral, but is very sheer and very moisturizing; it also gives that wet look that I’ve apparently been into lately because all I buy/wear are wet-looking sheer colors. The polishes, I was also very excited about and have already done Versailles for you!

Tan-ish gold

This nail polish is sooo pretty. I know I already said this about Borghese Limoncello, but Versailles is also like having blonde nails. There are so many things to love about this polish, for one it’s kind of a golden neutral: it’s obviously gold, but it’s subtle and stunning, not over-the-top, so I think it goes with everything and is good for just about any occasion. I also think it would look striking on any skin tone, on me it’s kind of a nude with a kick and for the ladies out there with darker skin tones it would be a bright pop of gold without too much glitter (not that there’s anything wrong with glitter). As for what you probably can’t see in the photos, there is a very subtle orange-coral shimmer to this polish, you can only really see it when you move your nails through the light, but it was a pleasant surprise for me because you wouldn’t expect it from the bottle.

Now, I do love this polish, but I have to admit it wasn’t all sunshine and roses after I put it on. I discovered a big DON’T when it comes to using Nars and that is: DON’T use Seche Vite as a top coat. I was expecting to paint and then pop on a quick coat of Seche Vite and go watch True Blood on Sunday night, but oh no. As soon as I’m out the door I see that my right thumb is utterly destroyed! You can imagine my dismay, I had to go for about 2 hours before I could fix it. The next day I noticed some peeling and some major tip wear and this hasn’t even been on for 24 hours. I read the paper that came in the box with the polish and it was then that I got the impression that this was meant to be used as an all-in-one type deal and not with base or top coat. It doesn’t say that explicitly, so I think the next time I am going to try Nars polish without base and top and see how it does, maybe after a day I’ll throw on a different top coat and see if they play nicely together. I’d like to use the top coat because it made the polish so much shinier. In any event, I have some more trial and error to do with this one, which is kind of a pain, but the colors are gorgeous. The important thing to remember so far is don’t use Seche Vite.

I’m looking forward to using Purple Rain. I’m also getting ready to put some polish on this evening and haven’t even decided what to use yet! It’s almost time for a Fourth of July-themed nail so I need to start thinking about that. Is anyone doing anything cute for the holiday?

‘Til we paint again,

-Lauren

Addendum: The last time I wore this polish I took these new pictures. I ended up not liking it as much the second time, it seemed so much more tan or khaki as opposed to gold. Maybe it’s just meant for summer? I guess we’ll see
